In response to your
inquiries, I've written
my own "Ntoskrnl Info"
Page, in an attempt to
explain the Problems
you can and Will . .
encounter making your
own "XP Boot Screens"
for the XP Home Edition
and XP Professional.

Boot
Screens here:

Let me begin by saying the Main purpose for "Linking"
to this page, was to
show you the problems in making your own "Boot Screens" for
XP...
It's
strongly recommended to
read the instructions carefuly
and make a
backup
copy
of your original *Boot.ini
and Ntoskrnl.exe** before you
start
manipulating.
So you
can recover in the
"worst case" your
original Ntoskrnl.exe**
through
the "recovery console" of
Windows XP or a second
parallel,
Windows installation on a
other disk partition and
repair your system.
*Boot.ini:
Here is
an example of a modified boot.ini
- 1st line is Original(default),
and the last New line
added in Bold Type:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="(Default)Windows XP" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="New XP BootScreen" /fastdetect
/KERNEL=nuboot.exe
(PLEASE Leave NO Spaces before, or after each Line)
*(My
"BootScreens" include the Ntoskrnl.exe,
But are RE-named for Safety)
**( I RE-name my
original Ntoskrnl.exe, to 8letters.exe, for
protection--example-only)
When this XP "Boot Screen" thing started, the only
version of "Ntoskrnl"
was version "5.1.2600.0"(SP-0). But
since then, the folks at Microsoft
have decided to make "Critical Updates" that
change the version of your
Original "Ntoskrnl.exe" to either
5.1.2600.31(SP-0), 5.1.2600.1106(SP-1),
and the Newer version 5.1.2600.1224
(SP-1/SP-2) - -
Please remember that the above versions of "Ntoskrnl.exe". . . . .
are NOT
compatible with each other! (This however, will not
affect the "Login Screen".)
Using the wrong
Version
of this file, can seriously Crash your System!!
The Most important thing to remember is to make
your "Boot Screen" with
the very same "version"
as the one located in "Your" Windows
directory!
Namely "C:\Windows\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe"
Also it's important to remember that the XP
Boot Screen
uses the
"Upper Left Corner", as
a marker (border color) while the "Boot Screen"
is Running . . . This (border) color is also used for the background
of the "Progression bar" . . .
Which is explained below.
Making
your 1st
"Boot Screen" (Using
"PaintShop Pro")
XP Boot
Screens are always
640 X 480(pixels) X 16 colors . . .

(Example 1) Made with "PaintShopPro"
(Example 2) "PaintShopPro" Palatte
These Examples were made using Existing Border Color(above)
This can be used when you are working with No-more than 2 colors.
As shown above, in "Example 1"(left)
and "Example 2"(right)

(Example 3) Made with "PaintShopPro"
(Example 4) "PaintShopPro" Palatte
These Examples were made using BLACK, as the Border Color..
This must be used when you are working with More than 2 colors.
As shown above, in "Example 3"(left)
and "Example 4"(right)
For more information on the "XP Boot Screens", Refer to the
following
page: the
"Boot Editor"
or Download this program - "HERE" - for XP-Pro.
To make "Login Screens", or use your own
"Progress Bar"(different colors)
